Fluency

Oral reading fluency tools

Check where a reader is, set a goal, and practice with purposeful repeated reading — using passages you choose.

Fluent reading is accurate, automatic, and expressive — not fast for its own sake. These tools track words correct per minute and accuracy while keeping the focus on meaningful practice. No student accounts required.

Oral Reading Fluency Calculator

Time a student's oral reading using a teacher-selected passage. Enter words read and errors, and the calculator computes words correct per minute and accuracy, compared with Hasbrouck & Tindal oral reading fluency norms to support interpretation.

Repeated Reading Rockets

Goal-based repeated reading with your own passage. Across three timed reads, the rocket climbs toward a chosen WCPM goal while the tool tracks words correct per minute and accuracy — and a built-in self-check invites the reader to reflect on how the reading sounded. Works one-on-one, in small groups, or as partner practice.

Repeated Reading Raceway

The same goal-based, three-read routine in a streamlined racing format: choose a passage and a WCPM goal, time each read, and watch the car move toward the finish as words correct per minute and accuracy are tracked. Quick, motivating practice for intervention, tutoring, centers, or partner routines.

Why three reads?

Repeated reading is one of the most well-established fluency practices in reading research. Rereading the same text — with a clear goal and visible feedback — helps a reader move from working through the words to reading them accurately, automatically, and with expression. Research on repeated reading points to a practical sweet spot: three purposeful reads can make growth visible, without turning practice into a chore.

From assessment to practice

1

Step 1 — Check where the reader is.

Use the Oral Reading Fluency Calculator with a passage you choose to find a current words-correct-per-minute and accuracy picture.

2

Step 2 — Set a reachable goal.

Teachers can set a reachable WCPM goal, or guide students in choosing one — a clear target gives every reread a purpose.

3

Step 3 — Practice with purpose, then recheck.

Three repeated reads in Rockets or Raceway make progress visible. Return to the calculator periodically to see growth over time.

Where these tools fit: teacher-led intervention, tutoring, centers, small groups, and partner practice. With teacher guidance, students can take turns reading, timing, and watching progress toward the goal — as practice, with the teacher setting the routine and checking in.

These tools support your fluency instruction — they don't replace teacher feedback or your school's required screeners and progress-monitoring systems.
