For full-passage ORF checks, passages of 200 words or fewer are recommended when possible. This keeps the fluency sample brief and easier to compare across students or across repeated checks. Longer passages can still be scored, but they may reflect stamina, attention, comprehension demands, and passage difficulty in addition to oral reading fluency.
Passage length note: ORF checks are usually brief. Consider using 200 words or fewer when possible, especially for screening or progress monitoring.
